Youth Services: Personal Care Events

Personal care is important for young women’s self-esteem and wellbeing. That's why PoHEO facilitates personal care events for young men and women. Our youth are joined by other community men and women - like business owners, athletes, elected officials, and community elders - who help sponsor the event and serve as adult community role models. The opportunity for personal care is an opportunity to discuss important topics for young men and women; respecting diverse perspectives, sharing wisdom and building relationships in a positive environment. In exchange for grooming services, youth commit to community service projects.

The purpose of the outreach is to engage young men and women around relevant issues for themselves and the community. Young women receive manicures while young men get a fresh haircut. Topics include how to manage issues with family and friends, self-esteem, self-worth, basic needs and safety.

There is sometimes a challenging relationship between youth, residents, business owners and police. Youth Dialogues have been a successful outlet to bring about open and honest conversations on the roles and responsibilities of youth in our communities.
